The flora and fuana found in the gut of ruminants plays a major role in their ability to break down their food. While this has been studied extensively in
domestic ungulates littel work has focused on the variation found in nature. We are investigating if the microbial community in the four chambers of a wild unuglates
stomach varies between the chambers and between individuals. Additionally we are attempting to determine if the microbial community in an individual deer's stomach is
contolled more by its diet or its genetics.
