LECTURE TEXT: Weidmaier, Raff & Strang. 2004. Vander, Sherman & Luciano’s Human Physiology: The Mechanisms of Body Function (9th ed.). McGraw Hill, New York

LABORATORY: Copy from Dr. Kelty’s web page: http://www.cst.cmich.edu/users/kelty1jd/bio392

GRADING: Grades or evaluation of the student's understanding of the material will be from the following percentages:

   1) General Examinations  (tentative dates in course outline).                                                                     60%

Exams (3 lecture {10% each} and 1 final{20%}) will consist of material presented in lecture, lab and readings.

The final will have a semi-comprehensive portion. Lecture Quizzes equal 10%. (Every Friday in lecture there will be a                                 Quiz unless told otherwise)

   2) Lab Quizzes  Given during  lab periods.                                                                                                       10%

       .

   3) Laboratory Reports and Exercises  Your lab instructor will                                                                  20%

discuss the report type, due date  and grade the exercise.

   4) Library Paper                                                                                                                                                10%

This paper will be a synopsis dealing with a specific area of  mammalian physiology and will be based information from at

least five current research articles (not reviews) from  scientific journals.  Titles will be due during the laboratory period  of  Feb. 24-26 and should be explanatory as to the topic. A photocopy of the first page of each article including the journal name,   volume, page, date and abstract will be due in the laboratory period of March 17-19.  This paper should   not be longer than 10 or  less than 6 pages, double-spaced and is  due on or before 5:00PM, April 16, 2004.  This paper  may not be used to or have been  used to fulfill the requirements of another course. Examinations and quizzes will be graded by Dr. McCorkle and the lab instructors.  Final grades will be based on the percentage of total points achieved and will approximately range as follows:

A  90-100%                        C  70-79%                                         Below 60% is failing

B  80-89%                          D  60-69%

MISCELLANEOUS

The final exam will not be given at any other than the scheduled time.  Make-up exams will be given only under extreme circumstances (illness, death in the family).  Students are expected to attend lectures and laboratories. A grade of incomplete will be given only to students who are passing the course and for some reason of emergency, fail to complete the course requirements.  The last day to withdraw from class with an automatic W is March 26, 2004.

CMU provides students with disabilities reasonable accommodation to participate in educational programs, activities or services.  Students with disabilities requiring accommodation to participate in class activities or meet course requirements should first register with the office of Student Disability Services (250 Foust Hall, telephone #517-774-3018, TDD #2568), and then contact me as soon as possible.

MISCELLANEOUS

1. The laboratory portion of this course is integral to the understanding of the various physiological processes discussed in the lecture.  Attendance is mandatory.  The written lab exercise will not be accepted from individuals who miss the lab or leave the lab early without prior notification of the lab instructor and labs that are missed can not be made up on other weeks. Communicate with the laboratory instructor on matters regarding the lab.

2. Laboratory work is performed as teams; the laboratory exercise is to be completed as an individual effort.

3. The Laboratory Graduate Assistant will grade your Laboratory Assignments, the Library Paper and will help with correcting lecture quizzes and exams.

4.
