STA 282 : Introduction to Statistics (Fall, 1999)
Section Number: 38113
Welcome to the class of Introductory Statistics. This may be the first time and the only time in your college experience that you take a course in statistics. I hope you will enjoy this course as much as I do. Many of you may come with a mindset that this is a difficult and not needed class in your college education. I hope you will find that it is not as difficult and boring as you thought. However, if you intend to just try to get by, this will be a nightmare for you. The easiest way to enjoy your college learning is to make your plan properly and study hard for it. I wish you all good luck and success.

Attendance Policy:
It is your responsibility to attend every scheduled class. No attendance will be taken. However, pop quizzes may be given if attendance is considered not good. These pop quizzes will be treated as regular quizzes; unless otherwise announced as extra credits in class.
Note 1 A 10-20 minute quiz will be given as scheduled in the above table. They will be given with closed book and notes. The worst one will be deleted.
Note 2 Home work will be given in class whenever needed. These home work problems will be posted on the course web. You must do all of the assigned problems. However, only one or two questions will be graded. Ten to 20 points for each home work.
Exercise problems listed at the end of this syllabus is NOT the same as home work problems. They are for your exercise only. They will NOT be collected. However, some of these exercise problems may be assigned as home work problems.
Note 3 Since all the schedules for quizzes are given in advance, there will be no makeup quizzes. If a student misses a quiz, the score will be zero. The home work problems will be given in class and posted on the course web, there is no make up home work. Any missed HW will be zero.
Note 4 Pop quizzes may be given occasionally if the attendance is not good. They will be treated as regular quizzes; unless otherwise announced as extra credits in class.
Note 5 Two tests and a final will be given. The tests will be given at the TESTING CENTER. The final will be given in class. No books or notes will be allowed. However, each student is allowed to prepare his/her own formula sheet (8.5" by 11" both sides).
No class on the testing date. You will have the whole day to take your test at the testing center. Bring your ID, pencils, calculator, and the allowed formula sheet. The formula sheet must be handed in with the test.
Please arrange your time properly to allow enough time to complete the test. At least two hours are recommended.
Note 6 Final exam will be comprehensive and closed book and notes. Approximately 50% will be from the new material, the other 50% will be from the old material.
Note 7 Tables needed for tests or final will be provided by the instructor.
Note 8 You must bring your own calculator to every lecture, quiz, test and final.
Note 9 Incomplete is allowed only if the case completely follows the University rules.
Note 10 There will be no makeup tests or final unless a student presents the verification of the definite excuse for his/her absence in advance. If it is not possible to bring in your documented excuse in advance, you must bring it in no later than the first lecture after the test. If a makeup test is needed, for the sake of fairness, it will be harder than the regular one. A makeup test will be allowed no latter than the first class after the test is given, if it is allowed.
Note 11 In this class, we will use computer lab in PE 402 occasionally. Reports of any assigned project are recommended to be prepared using word processing. The graphs and computer outputs should be summarized and integrated into your reports as needed. The original computer output is not acceptable. We will talk about how to integrate graphs, results from computer output into your report.
Note 12 Students with disabilities requiring accommodations to participate in class activities or meet course requirements should contact Carol Wojcik at 3018 as soon as possible.
