Welcome to the class of Introduction to Statistics. This course may be your first time and the only time that you are taking this type of course. You may have come with very diverse perceptions about this course. Regardless what your prior perception is, we will work together to make our class more interesting and the material more relevant to your daily life. I hope by the end of this semester, you will leave with an attitude that statistics, although very challenging, is not as boring as you might have thought before, and that statistics can be applied to your daily life as well as your future career.
Here is my belief of learning (from Confusius 2000 years ago):
I hear, I forget!
I read, I remember!
I do, I understand!
Learning without thinking, I will
be confused quickly.
Thinking without doing, I can
never fully accomplish my goal.
As you will quickly find out that we will conduct various in-class and off-class activities. You will be the person who participate in and get involved with all of these activities. Learning will take place through your involvement, participation and reinforcement. I will be making the plans and guiding your learning through designed processes.
Again, welcome to this STA 282 class, and be prepared to join, to participate and to work hard.
