Bio

I got my undergraduate degree in mathematics from Universidade de Brasília - UnB ("University of Brasília", in Brasil), and I am very proud of that.   The mathematics undergraduate program at UnB has repeatedly received letter grade "A" in the evaluation of higher education programs done by the Brazilian federal executive department of Education.  And I was a very good student.  They also have a very strong master's and doctoral programs.  I attended UnB from 1982 to 1988 - first as a physics major, then joining the mathematics department in 1985.

My graduate degree is a Ph.D. in Mathematics Education from Indiana University, in Bloomington, IN.  I am proud to be an "academic descendant" of the great Frank K. Lester, Jr. - my dissertation advisor.  See a list of us all at the Mathematics Genealogy Project.  I was a graduate student at IU from 1993 to 1997.

Upon receiving my degree I went back to my beloved country, where I taught at the Universidade Católica de Brasília - UCB ("Catholic University of Brasília", but I am sure you could have figured this out on your own).

My research interest lies in the intersection of  Mathematics Education with Adult Education, Anthropology of Education and History of Mathematics.   I am presently conducting research in ethnomathematics, writing up the results of fieldwork done on the uses of the game of uril in Cape Verde.
