Current Research on Sugar transport cells

Plants have vascular tissues as essential pipelines for the movement of water and nutrients throughout the plant body. The phloem tissue is the portion of the network that transports photosynthetic sugars produced in the leaves to other portions of the plant. The phloem transport cells or sieve elements are highly unusual because during development the cells undergo a self-digestion process in which some components are consumed and others are not. The research focus within the laboratory is to use cell, molecular, and microscopy techniques to study the molecular and biochemical events that occur during the unusual development of sieve elements within the pumpkin plant.
