Oral Presentation Guidelines

Purpose: present a 4-7 minute oral analysis of a on-line journal article relating to
course topics. Choose the article and date you want to present at Physical
Geography On Line Articles and sign up in class. Presentation times are assigned
on a first come first serve basis. No more than two presentations will occur on any
date
Evaluation: The presentation counts for 10% of the final course grade. I will assess
how well you cover the three main points below. Note that the second part of the
presentation has 4 subheadings.
Each presentation will have three parts:
1) You must have a clear introduction stating your name, the article's
title, the author, and the journal it appeared. "Hello, my name is x, today I'm
going to talk about article x by Mary x. This article appeared in the x on-line
journal."
2) Now give the main body of the presentation. This section will consist of
four
parts and should take up 80% of the presentation:
- What is the main purpose of the article?
- Where does this article take place? Use the map in front of the
classroom or use your own transparency map.
- Summarize the
article. How does this article relate to course content? Mention specific
concepts discussed in lecture or found in the textbook.
- Why is the article important?
The audience should always know which of the four points above you are discussing.
3) a clear conclusion summarizing your presentation's most important points. "In
this presentation I discussed article x by Mary x, the most important feature of this
article is x." This is the section to insert any personal opinion you have
about the article like, "How could you put such a dumb article on the list?" Or
this article relates to my life in that ...."
In addition to these points I will evaluate voice projection, eye contact, and how well
you stay within a 4-7 minute time limit.
