Chapter Objectives

Chapter 8

Patterns of Inheritance

1.  Define and distinguish between the following pairs of terms:  genotype vs. phenotype, dominant allele vs. recessive allele, and heterozygous vs. homozygous.

2.  Define and distinguish between true breeding organisms, hybrids, the P generation, and F1 generation, and the F2 generation.

3.  Explain how Mendel's principle of independent assortment applies to a dihybrid cross.

4.  Explain how a testcross is performed to determine the genotype of an organism.

5.  Define and distinguish between complete dominance, incomplete dominance, and codominance.

6.  Define and distinguish between multiple alleles, linked genes, pleiotropy and polygenic inheritance.

7.  Explain how chromosomes determine the sex of a human and why sex-linked diseases are more common in human males.
