What is the Hodge Conjecture?

In ICM in 1950, Hodge proposed his famous conjecture, which, roughly speaking, relates certain cohomology classes with subvarieties of an algebraic variety. Although this conjecture, which is known as one of a million-dollar problem, is still widely open, there are examples which have been known to experts for years. In this talk, I would like to introduce this conjecture, and to talk about a few classical examples. Basic notions in algebraic geometry and Hodge theory will be given in the beginning of the talk, for those who are not familiar with this subject.
