Graduate Fellowships & Assistantships

Three types of financial aid are available: graduate teaching assistantships  graduate fellowships.

Some of these are allocated for doctoral students and carry a higher stipend and summer support. A limited number of graduate research assistantships may be available, and are dependent on grant funding. Additional support is available for under represented minorities.

Completed fellowship applications are due Feb. 7. Completed assistantship applications are due March 1, although late applications may be considered if positions are available.

The applications available below may be submitted on-line or opened as PDF files, completed, printed, and mailed to Department of Mathematics, Central Michigan University, Mount Pleasant, MI 48859

    Graduate Teaching Assistantships

    Application  |  Re-appointment Policy

The department has a total of 30 teaching assistantships available for students in the M.A., M.A.T. and Ph.D. programs. Graduate Teaching Assistantships are awarded on a competitive basis.

In 2006-2007 graduate teaching assistants receive the following compensation package:

• An academic year stipend of between $10,500 to $14,500.

• Twenty credit hours of tuition waiver for the academic year. Unused credit hours may be used in the summer

• Out-of-state tuition waiver

• A summer stipend of between $1750 and $2400

Graduate Teaching Assistants (GTAs) normally teach two sections of Beginning Algebra (MTH055) or Intermediate Algebra (MTH105) per semester. These courses have a Director whose responsibilities include:

• Organizing departmental GTA orientation and training

• Preparing a course-pack for both MTH055 and MTH105

• Writing all tests for MTH055 and MTH105

• Holding regular meetings to discuss issues related to the instruction of MTH055 and MTH105

Experienced GTAs may ask to, or may be asked to, teach courses other than MTH055 and MTH105.

During the summer sessions Graduate Assistants normally provide tutoring for students in lower-level Mathematics courses or assist a faculty member with a research project.

Policy on re-appointment of Graduate Assistants

Graduate Teaching Assistantships are awarded for one year. Assistantships awarded to students in a Masters degree program are renewable for one additional year. Graduate assistants enrolled in a masters degree program requesting assistantships beyond two years must compete with new applicants for such awards. Assistantships awarded to doctoral students making satisfactory progress are renewable for two or more years.

    Doctoral Research Fellowships
    Re-appointment Policy |  Application

The department has a total of four Doctoral Research Fellowships available for students in the Ph.D. program. Doctoral Research Fellowships are awarded on a competitive basis.

This award provides a stipend ($12,250 in 2007-2008) and tuition waiver of 30 credit hours per year. Doctoral Research Fellows do not have any teaching-related duties during the academic year.

Doctoral Research Fellows are eligible to receive a summer assistantship that carries a stipend ($2400 in summer 2007), an additional 4 credit hours of tuition waiver and the waiver of class-related fees for one summer session. Doctoral Fellows holding a Summer Assistantship normally provide tutoring for students in lower-level Mathematics courses or assist a faculty member with a research project.

Policy on selection and re-appointment of Doctoral Fellows

  • Doctoral Research Fellowships are awarded on a competitive basis to students who will be enrolled full-time in the Ph.D. program in mathematics. This fellowship is awarded to students who have completed a Masters level degree in mathematics or who have strong mathematical preparation in their undergraduate degree.
  • During each of the two semesters of the award, recipients of Doctoral Research Fellowships must register for and complete at least nine graduate semester hours in the courses approved by the Mathematics Department, and must maintain a G.P.A. of 3.0 or higher.
  • Doctoral Research Fellowships are awarded for one year. Doctoral Fellows making satisfactory progress may receive a fellowship for a second year.
