Whitmore Mathematics Scholarship

 

 

To commemorate the lives of Edward H. Whitmore and Stephen H. Whitmore, the Edward H. Whitmore/Stephen H. Whitmore Mathematics Scholarship Endowment was established in 1993 by family and friends. Dr. Whitmore was a Mathematics Professor between 1965 and his retirement from CMU in December 1987. He served as Department Chairman from 1965 to 1974 and from 1976 to 1982. Spendable annual income from the endowment will be awarded to CMU senior students who have earned a 3.6 or higher in their mathematics major.

 

The amount and number of scholarships will be determined by available funds.

 

Eligibility

 

A recipient will be a second semester junior or higher who has been admitted to Teacher Education, has a declared mathematics major and has a grade point average of 3.6 or above in the mathematics major and has at least one year left before graduation. Scholarships will be for the 2008-2009 academic year.

 

Selection of students to be awarded this scholarship will be made by a committee composed of the Chairman of the Department of Mathematics and such other persons as the Chair may designate. The decision will be made on the basis of

 

            a.         two professional references,

            b.        grades in university/college courses, especially mathematics,

            c.         university/college mathematics courses completed,

            d.         a paragraph written by the student, and

            e.         other factors.

a.              complete a Mathematics Scholarship Application form*,

b.              list the names and email addresses of two (2)

           professional references on your application form.
