Miller Mathematics Scholarship

 

 

In honor of Professor William Miller and his wife, Delores Miller, an award was established in 2005. Professor Miller was a Mathematics Department faculty member from 1968 to 2000. He is a Michigan native with a specialty in mathematics education and a keen interest in problem solving.

 

The number, amount and recipient(s) of the Scholarship will be determined by the Mathematics Department in consultation with the Office of Scholarships and Financial Aid.

 

A recipient will be a student who is a junior who has completed at least two semesters at CMU and is a Mathematics, Statistics or Actuarial Science major. Recipients must demonstrate financial need. Preference shall be given to students who have graduated from Michigan high schools. The recipient should be a good mathematics student. However, serious consideration will be given to Òlate bloomersÓ, students who may not have been strong students when they began their university studies but have shown steady improvement and are now good mathematics students.

 

Selection of students to be awarded this scholarship will be made by a committee designated by the Chairman of the Department of Mathematics. The decision will be made on the basis of:

 

         a.         two professional references;

         b.        grades in university/college courses, especially mathematics;

         c.         university/college mathematics courses completed;

         d.         a paragraph written by the student; and

         e.         other factors.

b.              list the names and email addresses of two professional references

            on your application form.
