Math 105 Diagnostic Test

The test given below is meant to serve as a gauge to give the student feedback on whether s/he is placed appropriately in Math 105 (Intermediate Algebra). The test does not have any authority in the actual placement, but is designed to help the student decide if s/he should remain enrolled in Math 105, drop back to Math 055 (Elementary Algebra), or consider taking Math 107 (College Algebra). Since various high school mathematics curricula are difficult to compare, this test will give the student an idea of the expectations for background knowledge upon entering Math 105. The following rubric can be used to help the student make a decision as to whether or not to remain in Math 105; however, before making a decision it is strongly recommended that the student consult his/her instructor before dropping Math 105.

If the student scored:

0-3: s/he should consider dropping back to Math 055
4-10: s/he appears to have the background to be successful in Math 105
11-12: s/he should consider taking Math 107 or Math 106 (Trig) instead.

Again we emphasize that this test is for advisement only. Before dropping Math 105 the student should discuss the decision with his/her instructor.
