What kind is it?

Our electron microprobe is an ARL-SEMQ (s/n 10!) that was donated to our department by the General Electric Corporation in 1988. It is equipped with three WDS spectrometers fitted with ADP, PET, LIF, TAP, and PbSD crystals. We also have a KEVEX EDS detector with PGT Excalibur-X quantitative software. Our probe was completely refurbished in 1991 and has been kept in good condition ever since by the fine folks at Advanced Microbeam, Inc. Over the years, we have upgraded the instrument by adding a digital imaging system, a GW backscattered electron detector, a new vacuum controller system, and a high-precision beam regulator. In December of 1997, we replaced our older automation system with an Advanced Microbeam, Inc. "Probe for Windows" automation system which was further upgraded to a 32-bit NT version in January, 1999. This system uses optically-encoded servo motors for stage and spectrometer automation and software developed at the UC-Berkeley Microprobe lab by John Donovan. We are currently in the process of making our probe remotely accessible through a grant provided by the National Science Foundation.
