CMU geology student earns "Best Poster" honors at Geological Society of America meeting
For the fifth year in a row, a CMU geology student has taken "Best Poster" honors in the Sigma Gamma Epsilon (SGE) student research poster session at the international Geological Society of America meeting in Denver, Colorado. (SGE is the National Honor Society for the Earth Sciences.)

CMU Summer Scholar Brent Reynolds ('09) was awarded the Best Poster Award on Monday, October 29, 2007 after competing against 54 other student posters presented by undergraduate, M.S. and Ph.D. students in this session.

Brent's win comes after those of Lindy Straathof ('06), Elliot Jagniecki ('05), Rebecca Pressler ('04), and Brandi Boyd and Deric Learman ('03).
This achievement is something that the CMU Geology Department is extremely proud of, as no other institution can boast of anything close to our record of success in this area. Our congratulations are also due to Brent's advisors, Dave Matty and Jim Student.
It's also important to note that five other geology undergraduate students presented talks or posters in technical sessions where "Best Talks" or "Best Poster" designations were not awarded. All of these were very well received by those in attendance, including many of the top researchers in the various geological fields, who are now actively recruiting our students for graduate school.

The CMU Department of Geology offers degree programs leading to majors and minors in geology and in hydrogeology/environmental geology. Our department is also a vital component of
CMU's interdisciplinary Environmental Studies program.

Our Mission is "...to provide students with the background and critical thinking skills necessary to make informed decisions about earth systems-related problems, and to provide majors with the opportunity to obtain an excellent geological education in preparation for future careers in academia, industry, or government service."

To this end, the CMU Department of Geology places a high value on maintaining a rigorous program of study that incorporates field and laboratory-based research and "hands-on" learning into the undergraduate curriculum.
