Department of Geology College of Science & Technology Central Michigan University
COURSES TAUGHT : Physical Geology Lecture and Laboratory, Introduction to Earth Systems,
Earth Processes, RESEARCH: My research is focused in two areas. I study how magma flows to fill a pluton or shallow level intrusive and I also focus on how wall rocks "flow" in the solid state, in response to these hot injections of magma. I really enjoy combining microstructural observations with mapping and field-work to understand the flow of rocks and magma on different scales. I work in the high desert mountains of western California (White-Inyo Range) and in the Henry Mountains of southern Utah. I (along with my collaborator, Peter Nabelek, U. of Missouri) recently (2007) received NSF funding to examine how fluids of differing composition affect the deformation mechanisms around a pluton in California. Here at CMU I teach Structural Geology, Field Methods, Physical Geology, and Physical Geology Lab. I, along with colleague and buddy Dave Matty, routinely take students up the to U.P. to map, see some great structures, and observe some beautiful igneous and metamorphic rocks.
