The Department of Geology offers majors and minors
in geology and hydrogeology/environmental geology. Majors may choose
between two degree options, preprofessional ("Option A") and
traditional ("Option B"). Both majors are designed to provide
students with a sound background in the fundamentals of the geological
sciences in both theory and application.
Students selecting the (Option A) preprofessional
track are required to complete a senior thesis - which involves original
research by the undergraduate student under the close supervision of
a faculty member - or an alternate approved research-based course. In
either case, students typically present their work at national or regional
meetings of professional organizations and may submit their work for
publication in a professional journal.
The traditional (Option B) track is designed
for students who desire the curricular freedom of selecting a minor.
Students may choose between a geology major or hydrogeology/environmental
concentration. With an appropriate minor, this curriculum will adequately
prepare a student for graduate school or a career in the geological
or environmental sciences.
