What are the employment opportunities?

Professional organizations anticipate an increasing demand for geologists into the next century. Both salaries and employment opportunities are forecasted to increase, particularly for geoscientists specializing in hydrogeology, environmental geology, and petroleum geology. Careers in the geosciences routinely rank in the top five in financial magazine surveys of job satisfaction. For an excellent summary of careers in the geosciences, visit the Earth Science World Careers Web Site at http://www.earthscienceworld.org/careers/brochure.html.

CMU geology alumni have fared very well in the competition for entry-level positions with just a B.S. degree, largely because of the individual attention they received from faculty, the rigor of the program, and their experience with original research. However, many employers increasingly require graduate training for entry-level positions, and it is significant that from 1990-1998 more than 95 percent of CMU geology graduates who have applied to graduate schools have been accepted with funding (teaching or research assistantships and tuition waivers).
