Martin Steinbis email: mtstein@pdq.net Phone: (281) 496-2482 After a long association with Amoco Production Company as a Senior Staff Geologist, Martin is now an independent businessman in Houston, TX "CMU's Geology Department has come a long way since the early graduates of the mid 70's. I've been impressed with progress the Department has made through the geoscience downturn - since 1987. I miss the great summers in Michigan. Best wishes to all. PS -If anyone hears from Jim Oldfield, John Fierstien, Chuck Shaefer, Barb Yantis, Bob Reynolds, or the rest of the student pioneers... tell them to write!"
John Fierstien e-mail: john@fierstien.net Phone: (512) 858-2024 John is a Business Unit Manager - Surface Modeling at Landmark Graphics CMU is clearly one of the finest universities in the country. I enjoyed the very personal attention given to all of us in the -then- very small department. In 1997 I joined Landmark in Austin, Texas. I am currently working in the Surface Modeling & Mapping group where I am using both my geological and computer skills to develop new mapping and surface modeling software for the petroleum industry. Nancy and the boys are doing great and enjoying their new home in the Texas hill country.

Amy Thompson email: thomp2ag@jmu.edu Amy is a part-time professor in the Geology and Environmental
Studies Department "Since graduating from CMU, I earned my MS at Texas Tech University and my PhD at University of New Mexico with an emphasis in structural geology and igneous and metamorphic petrology. Then I started teaching with stints at Hope College (MI), Gustavus Adolphus College (MN), and Lafayette College(PA), before ending up at James Madison University (VA). In between, I took a year of hydrogeology courses from Western Michigan University. Right now, I'm teaching part time at JMU where my husband is a full time mathematics professor. We've finally found a place we'd like to stay -- the Shenandoah Valley has great places for hiking and biking, and the geology is pretty interesting too. I now live near the areas we visited during the Spring Break1985 field trip with Dr. Steve Stahl."
Christy (Kehn) Easter e-mail: clkehn@hotmail.com Phone: (404) 362-2559 Christy is a Senior Geologist for the State of Georgia Environmental Protection Division "I've been working for the State of Georgia - Environmental Protection Division since 1990 reviewing environmental monitoring plans for solid waste disposal facilities - and I'll be taking Georgia's Professional Geologist exam later this year. I have a husband and two wild children - Justin 4 and Heather 8 - who keep me busy between soccer and baseball. I can't believe how much Central has changed since I was there. I can remember spending some really long days (and nights) studying on third floor Brooks! It's ironic that I ended up working in the very area I did my paper on in our 1985 Field Methods class.I've been wondering what some of the guys I used to study with are doing now - Chris? Dan? or Alex? where did you guys end up?"

My job essentially entails collecting, managing, and interpreting hydrologic and geologic data. I have already worked on several projects dealing mostly with DOW. I can't tell you more or I'd have to kill you. For aspiring students, I would recommend becoming intimately familiar with newer technology - e.g. GIS analysis, database management or remote sensing. These skills are invaluable tools to the professional geologist and will set you apart from those who are unfamiliar with these areas."

Matt Valice e-mail: valice@netexp.com phone: 810-463-9464 Matt works for Laidlaw Environmental as a Project Manager. What I basically do is manage industrial waste for General Motors Corporation. Right now I manage about 33 plants in Michigan, Indiana, and Ohio. I am also the quality control manager for GM's non-hazardous bulk waste. This is a program set up by GM to ensure the integrity of their non-hazardous waste as what they call Non-Haz. Let me tell you - they try to get large amounts of waste landfilled as non-haz. You ask why? Well, it's cheaper and requires less reporting to the govt. My next move within Laidlay will be an In-Site Environmental Engineer working within one plant handling all their regulatory compliance issues - including all EPA reporting - disposal, and recycling and waste minimization issues. This is basically what I do now but minus 32 plants. That is, if I don't get snatched up by another company for more money. My best advice is to get an internship. For instance, I performed mine at Total Petroleum. Another good tip is to get a minor or just come classes in environmental health and safety. This is a very big industry and one I'm trying to gain some knowledge in. After working for NTH Consultants, Ltd. in Farmington Hills, MI as a Staff Geologist for almost 2 years I now work or the Michigan Department of Environmental Quality, Environmental Response Division. I work out of the Saginaw Bay District office in Bay City, MI. My job involves technical review and oversight of several sites of environmental contamination. I thought those of you in the Geology Department who still remembered us might be interested to know that Jim and I are engaged! We haven't set a permanent date yet but it will probably be next fall (September). I'd love to hear updates on anyone from the old group.
