Undergraduate Programs

The Department of Geology offers majors and minors in geology and Hydrogeology / environmental geology. Geology is the general study of the earth and earth systems and can prepare you for a career as a professional geologist, a related profession that draws upon geology, a teaching career or graduate studies in the geological sciences. Hydrogeology / environmental geology involves the application of geology to groundwater related or environmental problem. This program will prepare you for a career as an environmental geologist, where you may evaluate and inspect sites for contamination, monitor the effects of pollution and solve problems of waste disposal, urban development, and hazards such as flooding or erosion. In the field of environmental geology, you may work as a hydrogeologist and determine the underground flow of water, manage groundwater as a resource, or detect and trace groundwater contamination.

Majors may choose between two degree options, preprofessional ("Option A") and traditional ("Option B"). Both majors are designed to provide students with a sound background in the fundamentals of the geological sciences in both theory and application.

Students selecting the (Option A) preprofessional track are required to complete a senior thesis - which involves original research by the undergraduate student under the close supervision of a faculty member - or an alternate approved research-based course. In either case, students typically present their work at national or regional meetings of professional organizations and may submit their work for publication in a professional journal.

The traditional (Option B) track is designed for students who desire the curricular freedom of selecting a minor. Students may choose between a geology major or hydrogeology/environmental concentration. With an appropriate minor, this curriculum will adequately prepare a student for graduate school or a career in the geological or environmental sciences.
