Environmental Studies Program
WELCOME!
Central Michigan University offers an interdisciplinary major in Environmental Studies. Focusing on the complex relationships between humans and the natural environment, this program is designed to meet the needs of students who plan environmental careers, as well as those who simply care about environmental issues.
All students choosing the Environmental Studies major must complete courses in biology, geology, economics, political science, law & regulation, and environmental studies. Students can select one of two concentrations: Environmental Policy or Environmental Science. Environmental scientists are involved in many aspects of environmental protection, monitoring, assessment, and remediation. Environmental policy specialists participate in many relevant activities, such as environmental planning, regulation and policy making. Students majoring in Environmental Studies will also have the opportunity to gain practical experience by completing a six-week internship with a cooperating agency.
To major in Environmental Studies, you must select a second major in another discipline. This unusual requirement is designed to make you competitive when pursuing an environmental career. Employers are seeking individuals with broad exposure to the many disciplines relating to the environment, and with a strong background in one discipline. This preparation is provided by the Environmental Studies major combined with a suitable second major. The choice of major depends on your interests and career goals. Relevant second majors include: political science, chemistry, geography/land-use planning, geology/hydrogeology, biology/natural resources, mathematics, computer science, journalism, and recreation. Other combinations are also possible.
There is a minor in Environmental Studies for students pursuing Bachelor of Applied Arts (BAA) or Bachelor of Science in Business Administration (BS in BA) degrees.
If you are interested in the Environmental Studies major you should consult an adviser early in your academic career.
