About the ACSSA

So either deep down, or perhaps just below the surface, you’ve come to find that you have a burning passion for chemistry. Or more likely, you have some small interest in it that you’d just like to explore. I can honestly say that there may be no better way to join an outstanding academic and social community than to join the American Chemical Society Student Affiliates.

"... by attending meetings you might just find yourself a chemistry tutor, a study partner, or a group of friends ..."

Throughout my four years at CMU I’ve been part of many other clubs and RSO’s which either left me sitting on the outside of a circle or made me feel like I had to put forth some great effort to maintain membership. The ACSSA does neither of these things. We have no dues, requirements, or gauche initiations. We hold short, bi-weekly meetings and offer an array of activities to participate in. Then, once you realize how much fun you’re having, we make it easy for you to get even more involved with us.

I’m guessing that if you’ve read this far, you may now be wondering what ACSSA can offer you. For those of you who are pursuing a career that requires any knowledge of chemistry, even to the smallest extent, we offer you networking opportunities with prospective employers and graduate schools as well as insight into many other occupational fields such as forensic science, green chemistry, dentistry, scientific research, teaching, food chemistry, environmental science, and much more. We also give you plenty of opportunities to get to know your professor outside of the classroom, build resume experience, and become an active volunteer in the Mt. Pleasant community.

"... there may be no better way to join an outstanding academic and social community than to join the ACSSA."

Just to clarify, we don’t spend our meeting times chit-chatting about how much we all love chemistry, but by attending meetings you might just find yourself a chemistry tutor, a study partner, or a group of friends who can all gladly admit to having an inner nerd. Although we try to incorporate science into a good deal of our community service and academic/professional projects, we also make sure to BBQ, play sand volleyball, bowl, eat plenty of pizza, hold CSI Night, and take trips to cities like Toronto, New York City, Chicago, and San Diego.

Our doors are always open to new members, so please, feel free to stop by.
