Emily Petty was a Centralis undergraduate student who worked in the Schisa lab for 2 years. She presented her research at the the AAAS meeting in Seattle and was selected in the 2004 competition sponsored by CUR (Council on Undergraduate Research) to present her work at the National Posters at the Capitol event in Washington DC. She is shown here with US Senator Debbie Stabenow. Emily is currently finishing her first year in the PhD Program in Biomedical Sciences at the University of Michigan.

Ann Spain Anne Spain

Anne and Erin both started working in Dr. Alm’s lab as sophomores and were involved in undergraduate research for 3 years, during which time they participated in BIO 403, wrote successful competitive research proposals, presented at national meetings, and co-authored manuscripts.
Anne was awarded a summer fellowship from the American Society for Microbiology, one of only 20 awarded nationwide.

Anne is in her 5th year of graduate studies at the University of Oklahoma and is a PhD candidate of Microbiology at University of Oklahoma.

Erin was a CMU Summer Scholar. She is finishing the 2nd year of a Ph.D. program of Biomedical Science at the University of Michigan.

Destin PewittDestin Pewitt Destin Pewitt received his bachelor’s degree from CMU. After receiving research experience in the biology department, Destin spent a summer in Glacier National Park sampling trout in remote mountain lakes. Since graduation, he has worked for the Illinois Natural History Survey studying yellow perch in Lake Michigan, and he recently took a position with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.
Matt ClayMatt Clay Matt Clay spent four years working in Dr. Swanson’s lab on sharptailed grouse and fisher. He presented at the AAAS annual meeting. He has two papers in the final stages of preparation for submission to peer-reviewed journals. He currently works in a genetics lab at the University of Michigan and is applying for PhD programs.

Robin RayRobin Ray Robin Ray was a McNair scholar and summer scholar. She spent two years working in my lab on the effects of habitat fragmentation on genetic variation in badgers. She presented at the American Society of Mammalogy and the Ecological Society of America. She is currently working in the biotech field.
Kelsey Gibbons Kelsey Gibbons Kelsey Gibbons has completed a project using genetics to determine if the small mouth bass of the Beaver Island Archipelago were bottlenecked recently (last 1000 years) or much longer ago. She has presented her work at the American Association for the Advancement of Science meeting. She is working on the final draft of her paper to be submitted to Canadian Journal of Fisheries and Aquatic Sciences. She was selected for the Hope College summer REU program (only 10% acceptance rate) and will initiate a new project on Ambystoma salamanders in the fall, looking at gene flow in salamanders throughout the Beaver Island Archipelago.
