Biology Major (BA, BS)

  • General Option | Suggested Course Sequence
    This option is for students who do not plan to attend a professional graduate school upon graduation and are not planning to enter a field associated with natural resources. This option provides flexibility in the choice of electives.

  • Pre-graduate/Pre-professional Option | Suggested Course Sequences
    This option is for students who plan to enter a graduate or professional school after graduation from CMU.

  • Microscopy Option | Suggested Course Sequence
    This option is for students who plan a career as a biological microscopist. Research laboratories, hospitals, pharmaceutical companies, chemical companies, food processing laboratories and forensic laboratories are areas in which opportunities exist for microscopists.

  • Natural Resources Option | Suggested Course Sequence
    This option is for students who plan to enter an area of natural resource management, wildlife biology, nature interpretation or museum science.

  • Biology/Biomedical Sciences Major (B.S.) | Suggested Course Sequences
    This major is designed for students interested in pursuing professional programs in human and/or animal medicine or biomedical research. This course of study is designed to satisfy the prerequisites for admission into professional programs as well as provide students with the breadth and depth of scientific concepts in biology, chemistry and physics to perform well on required admission exams for professional programs such as the MCAT, DAT or GRE.

BIO 403

Open to seniors and selected juniors, majoring in Biology, who have completed 20 hours with a B average. Philosophy, techniques and methods of research. See instructor by the middle of the semester prior to enrollment to design the project and sign the contract. Registration requires approval of department chairperson (Dr. Claudia Douglass). BIO 495

An in-depth work experience in the student's area of interest performed under a trained professional in the selected area of biology for 6 to 24 weeks. Prerequisites: The student must have junior standing with a minimum of a 3.0 grade point average in biology and completed at least 20 credit hours before being eligible for the internship program. Students not meeting these requirements may petition for a waiver through their advisor and the department chair (Dr. Claudia Douglass). Download Application | External Internships
