Undergraduate Scholarships

BIOLOGY DEPARTMENT SCHOLARSHIPS

To apply, please follow the directions outlined on the application form. Except for the Biological Station Scholarship, please fill out forms electronically, then submit a hard copy..

Due date for all scholarships (except Freshman and Transfer Scholarships) is March 15.

2006-2007 Biology Scholarship Recipients

*BIOLOGY DEPARTMENT ENDOWED SCHOLARSHIPS

The Biology Department Endowed Scholarships were established to recognize and attract outstanding students who major in biology at CMU. Each $1000 scholarship is funded through private gifts from CMU faculty, alumni and friends. They are awarded to incoming freshman or transfer students who have earned a grade point average of 3.5 or higher and demonstrate strong credentials in biology, chemistry and mathematics.

*BIOLOGICAL STATION SCHOLARSHIP

These tuition scholarships are awarded to students who enroll for Biology summer classes at our Biological Station on Beaver Island, MI Undergraduate and graduate students are eligible to apply for tuition remission for one class each summer. Please go to the Biology department office or contact Dr. Gillingham for application forms. For more information go to CMUBS.

*CLAUDIA B. DOUGLASS

Purpose: To provide a scholarship award to a CMU freshman, sophomore, junior or senior student with a signed major in Science or Integrated Science on an elementary education curriculum. (Download Application)

*JOHNSON ENDOWED SCHOLARSHIP

This scholarship is an interdepartmental scholarship in the area of chemistry, biology and physics. The scholarship is awarded to students majoring in science teacher education.

*NORVALL C. AND EVELYN GAGNON BOVEE SCHOLARSHIP (Biological Station Scholarship)

To provide an award to a junior or senior student who is taking classes or doing research at the CMU Biological Station on Beaver Island. The scholarship may be used for tuition, books, and room and board expenses at the CMU Biological Station. Please go to the Biology department office or contact Dr. Gillingham for application forms. *FEDERATED GARDEN CLUBS OF MICHIGAN

A $1000 yearly award to an outstanding biology undergraduate student with interests in botany, horticulture and/or allied subjects. Eligible students will have taken introductory botany, a second plant course and maintain a minimum 3.0 GPA. (Download Application)

*ROBERT FELL MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP

Established in memory a former biology faculty member, this $400 scholarship is awarded annually with preference given to a disabled person who is majoring in Biology.

*DR. W.E. AND IDONEA LEWIS HERSEE SCHOLARSHIP

Purpose: To provide a scholarship award to a CMU junior with a Biology major on the pre-medicine program. (Download Application)

*ARTHUR LOREN KONTIO OUTSTANDING YOUNG BIOLOGIST PRIZE

Purpose: To recognize an outstanding freshman or sophomore student who is in good academic standing. Biology faculty nominate the student for this prize. A compelling letter of nomination is needed on behalf of the student. No other materials are required.

*OLIVE HUTCHINSON KRIES SCHOLARSHIP

Dedicated to the memory of a former faculty member, this $500 scholarship is awarded annually to a Biology major with a 3.5 GPA. (Download Applicatioon)

*KIMBERLY SUE MILLS MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP

This $500 scholarship was established in memory of a former CMU biology student. Junior or Senior students who have a 3.0 GPA and are majoring in Biology are eligible to apply.

*DR. DAVIS S. AND BERNICE A. (NELSON) LIRONES SCHOLARSHIP

This $500 scholarship is awarded to students majoring in pre-medicine or pre-osteopathy. Qualifications: Junior or senior standing with a 3.0 GPA or better in one of the preferred programs. The student must have a signed major in biology and complete at least one biology course per semester as a full-time student (12 credit/semester), and have at least a 3.25 GPA in biology, chemistry and physics courses. The applicant must provide two letters of recommendation, transcripts, and a letter describing career goals, extracurricular activities, etc.

*GIL AND KAY STARKS ENDOWED SCHOLARSHIP (Biological Station Scholarship)

This scholarship award is for a student who is seeking a Secondary Education Certification in Biology and who has an outstanding academic background. Applicant must be enrolled in a class at the Biological Stations on Beaver Island. Please go to the Biology department office or contact Dr. Gillingham for application forms. *THE GEORGE R. WHEELER SCHOLARSHIP

This scholarship is given to a sophomore, junior or senior pursuing studies in outdoor environmental education, ecology or conservation. The award is $500/year to a student with good academic standing. (Download Application)

*TRANSFER STUDENTS SCHOLARSHIP

Purpose: To provide an award to a transfer student majoring in biology who has an outstanding university, college, or community college academic background. Qualifications: The student must have a 3.25 GPA or better, and must provide transcripts, a copy of a singed major in biology, two letters of recommendation, a statement of education/career goals, and information on extra curricular activities. The scholarship is renewable for each year of a four-year program. (Download Application)

*INCOMING FRESHMAN SCHOLARSHIP

Purpose: To provide awards to incoming freshmen who intend to major in biology and who have outstanding high school academic backgrounds.
Qualifications: Applicant must be an incoming freshman with a minimum GPA of 3.5, strong background in biology and chemistry, three years of mathematics, and an ACT composite scores of 25 or better. Each applicant must provide two letters of recommendation, a statement of his/her educational/career goals, and information on extra curricular activities.

*IRENE JORAE BIOLOGY SCHOLARSHIP

Purpose: To provide awards to incoming freshmen who intend to major in biology and who have outstanding high school academic backgrounds.
