Optometrists, or doctors of optometry, specialize in the examination of
the eyes and vision systems to determine their health, proper focus and
function. If deficiencies or abnormalities are found, optometrists
prescribe and provide the necessary treatment, management or referral to a
specialist to solve the problem. This may involve the use of lenses or
other specialized services to achieve accurate, comfortable and efficient
vision and to restore the vision system to a state of health. Many
optometrists are in practice by themselves. Others are in partnerships or
group practices with other optometrists or physicians as part of a health
care team.
