Special Examinations & Required License
Applicants are required to take the
Optometry Admissions Test (OAT), which is designed to measure general
academic ability and scientific knowledge. It is essential that the OAT be
taken during the fall testing session preceding the fall for which entry
is being sought. All states require optometrists to be graduates from an
accredited optometry school and obtain a license in order to practice.
Obtaining a Doctor of Optometry degree usually requires at least six-years
of post-secondary training. Most students obtain a bachelor degree along
the way.
