FAQ
Where can I find information about careers in
optometry and optometry education?
The best single source and the very best place to start is the site
maintained by the Association of Schools and Colleges of Optometry <
http://www.opted.org/info_main.cfm >.
Does CMU have an optometry major?
No. While attending CMU you will be taking the basic background courses
needed prior to applying to a school/college of optometry. You will be
taking many of the same courses as our pre-med and pre-dental students.
Do I need to graduate from CMU before going to
optometry school?
No, it is not necessary. But since it takes most students at least
three years to complete the pre-optometry requirements at CMU, you should
seriously consider completing an undergraduate degree before going to
optometry school.
What should I major in at CMU?
You should major in something you enjoy, something you are good at,
something you might want to fall back on in case you decide that optometry
is not for you after all. Optometry schools do not require that you have a
certain major. However, since most of the pre-optometry courses are in the
sciences, a science or psychology major would have many courses in common
with the pre-optometry requirements.
Where are the schools/colleges of optometry
outside Michigan?
There are 16 schools/colleges in the U.S.A. outside Michigan. A
complete list of contact information may be found at <http://www.opted.org/info_links.cfm>.
