Physicians may be employed in a private practice, or work in industry,
research, education or administration. Both medical doctors and
osteopaths diagnose and treat illnesses and disorders of the human body.
Both use modern medical tools and tests, perform surgery, prescribe and
give medicine, and conduct research. However, osteopathic treatment
involves the musculoskeletal system (the bones, muscles, and joints) as an
additional area of concern. Preventive medicine is an important
aspect of both types of service. Those physicians receiving M.D.
degrees are Doctors of Allopathic Medicine while those receiving D.O.
degrees are Doctors of Osteopathic Medicine.
