I am not sure as to which engineering school
or even which engineering program (discipline) I want to pursue--what do I
do?
There are numerous web
sites that provide a lot of program and career information--check the many
links
that are listed here for you. One more thing that makes your
choices not so crisis intensive--the first two years of a pre-professional
engineering program is very similar no matter which program or school you
eventually transfer to--but see your advisor!!
What kind of GPA is required at CMU in
order to transfer to an engineering school?
Very good question. The GPA requirement varies (sometimes greatly) by
school and also by program--even at a given school. Fortunately, your
advisor has data that can be shared with you about each engineering
program within the state. Some schools have limited capacity for accepting
transfer students, so their published GPA requirement may be the minimum
for consideration. Acceptance requirements could be higher!
See your advisor.
When should I contact the engineering school
for transfer applications?
Assuming that you have completed the required course work you should
apply to the engineering schools after grades are posted here that are for
your first semester of the sophomore year (or at the completion of three
semesters). You should be in contact with 2-3 schools as
early as you freshman year. You may want to actually apply to more than
just one engineering school.
Is there a license required after graduation
in order to be to an engineer?
Not really--but that option should be seriously considered and depends
somewhat on which area of engineering you plan to work in after graduation.
This brings up a related issue though--you should graduate from an
accredited engineering program. The accreditation should be by the
Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology (ABET). During your
senior year you should take the Engineering in Training (EIT) exam which
is required prior to sitting for the Professional Engineers (PE) Exam
sometime later in your career and after on-the-job work experience and
with the recommendation of other professional engineers. Some of these
requirements vary by state you would be licensed in.
Will Michigan engineering schools accept
courses taken at CMU?
Your advisor has contacted all of the schools in Michigan and there are
lists of required as well as approved elective courses. Also, there are suggested
courses for specific engineering programs (e.g. civil, electrical, etc.)
