Careers within the profession of dentistry are widely diversified,
providing many opportunities for challenging and rewarding service.
Examples of these varied opportunities include general practice, clinical
specialties (such as oral surgery, orthodontics, and pediatric dentistry),
public health, biomedical research, and government and military service
careers. Dentists work alone or with a dental hygienist, nurse, or dental
assistant. They generally work in clean comfortable surroundings. Dentists
may perform some of their own laboratory work in their own laboratories.
They must be able to visualize three-dimensional objects from diagrams and
coordinate their eyes and hands to accurately perform detailed tasks. A
professional or doctorate degree (seven to ten years of study beyond high
school) is required to apply for a license to practice dentistry.
