FAQ
Is an Architectural program like or similar to an
Engineering program?
Architecture deals not only with technical issues, but includes a major
emphasis in art--both two and three dimensional. Architects think of their
work as resulting in the purest form of applied art. Architectural
students are very concerned with course subjects that address issues
relating to form and function. Architectural students do not take all the
mathematics and science classes that engineering students take as part of
that program.
When should I plan to transfer and when should
I apply to the architectural school?
You should not wait to apply any later than the end of the first
semester of the sophomore year. Unlike engineering, which has a very
standard or universal first two years, architectural programs start very
specialized "design" courses early during the sophomore year. So, it
is best to transfer no later than at the end of the second year--earlier
if one has the ability to meet admission requirements.
How long does the completion of an
architectural degree typically take and is there a professional
registration exam in Architecture?
Good question. Architectural programs vary in length and can be four,
five, or six years in length. You should certainly transfer to a school
that has an accredited program(s) recognized by the
American Institute of
Architects (AIA). These programs are typically the five and six-year
programs--but that can vary by state. The four-year programs typically are
not accredited and do not lead to professional registration as a licensed
architect. Individual states do have varying rules
and regulations.
Are there special admission requirements that
need to be met and just how difficult is it to get into and architectural
program?
As mentioned earlier some architectural programs require essays to
address architectural related topics and/or require a portfolio of
architectural and/or art related projects. Enrollments are
generally very competitive but do vary by institution and your
pre-professional architectural advisor can help you address those issues.
There are currently four architectural programs within the state of
Michigan.
Are there recommended classes that are
recommended by each architectural school?
Yes, each pre-professional program in architecture has slightly
different course requirements and your
advisor can provide them to
you--call and arrange a meeting.
