General Guidelines for
CMU Pre-Architecture Courses

The pre-architecture program at CMU allows students to transfer courses to Michigan schools offering degrees in architecture and landscape architecture.  Pre-architecture programs, significantly different than pre-engineering programs, include extensive art/design classes, two courses in English composition, calculus, and physics.

Pre-architecture students also take courses in humanities, natural sciences, social sciences, and introductory computer science.  See the Pre-architecture adviser for specific CMU transfer guides for students wishing to pursue architecture and landscape architecture degrees.

Prior to admission, architectural schools review the quality and content of your previous education, personal statements of professional purpose, and letters of recommendation.  Students may be asked to write an essay related to architecture, or to prepare a portfolio of art and architectural projects.

IMPORTANT
All pre-professional students need to see their pre-professional adviser as early as possible.  Planning a course of study with a CMU adviser is critical since entrance requirements vary from one school to another.  Students must also make early contact with schools to which they may be applying.

Students who intend to graduate with a degree from CMU must complete, and have their adviser sign, a "Major Authorization" form prior to finishing 56 credit hours.

Students who plan to transfer to a professional school must complete and have their adviser sign an "Intent to Declare Major" form prior to completing 56 credit hours.

Forms available at the Registrars Office or your adviser.
