International studies
The College of Science and Technology faculty believe that it is very important for CMU students to take advantage of opportunities for study in other countries and cultures. Each year, approximately 400 CMU students study abroad - and more students are going abroad every semester.
During the 2006-2007 academic year, CMU students studied in 33 countries on 6 continents, and 196 study abroad scholarships were awarded.
With a study abroad, you'll learn more about the world of other cultures while making progress toward your degree. Foreign study also offers you a global experience that is becoming increasingly more important for employers.
These opportunities may be as long as a semester or as short as a week or ten days. They may involve one student or a large group. In recent years, several CST students have traveled to England, Australia, Costa Rica, Russia, China, and Mexico, to name just a few.

Study abroad programs
Most students prefer to study abroad during fall or spring semester as part of the regular academic year. Some students prefer to save international study for a summer session, when they won't miss out on CMU activities. Still others prefer to study with a CMU class led by a faculty member.
Whatever option suits you, you will find hundreds of possibilities at CMU that will allow you to participate in international study all year long.

Exploring your study abroad options
CMU is a member of several organizations that offer study abroad programs, such as the Midwest Consortium for Study Abroad (MCSA). CMU's membership in a number of organizations offers you a variety of international study opportunities.
In addition, not all study abroad experiences take place in classrooms. You may find other avenues to experience a global workforce through work, internship or volunteer opportunities.

Scholarships
If you want to study abroad but don't think you can afford to, you may be wrong! There are many scholarships and professor-led study abroad opportunities.
CMU was named one of the top 20 institutions nationwide to receive Benjamin A. Gilman Scholarships for students who study abroad. The Gilman Scholarships provide awards of $3,000-$8,000 and are offered through the U.S. State Department to students with financial need who receive a Pell Grant.
A number of scholarships are available, both through CMU and CST, that may help fund your study abroad. Many sources outside the university also may help finance your international study. Every year, about 200 CMU students receive special scholarships that allow them to study abroad.
