"Whiskey Point, with its Lake Michigan frontage, existing boathouse, and pair of well-constructed mooring docks, offers immediate opportunities to expand and enhance our teaching and research programs throughout the northern portion of Lake Michigan and beyond."
-Michael Rao, CMU President
Friends of Beaver Island
A society to support the CMU Biological Station
The Friends of Beaver Island is dedicated to the enhancement of the Central Michigan University Biological Station on Beaver Island. Started in 1995 to help provide financial support, its members value conservation and academic excellence. The organization hopes to enrich student learning and life experiences, as well as foster the CMU Biological Station's growing reputation by providing funding for maintenance and expansion of existing facilities.
Beaver Island supporters have many opportunities to continue giving, year after year, to help hundreds of students and faculty members study and conduct research on Beaver Island. Membership funds support hands-on research and strengthen the quality of education for students.
Friends have generously provided monies for educational offerings on the island, such as purchasing land, restoring the island's trail systems, supporting research, and restoring buildings. Donors contributed the majority of the sale and restoration price of the Whiskey Point Coast Guard Boathouse, which CMU bought from the state for $1.25 million.
The $250 annual membership fee to join Friends of Beaver Island is tax deductible and includes an initial complimentary gift depicting one of the island's natural wonders.
The Biological Station is strategically important to CMU, to Michigan, and to the Midwest. Please contact Gail Moore if Friends of Beaver Island is a society that you're interested in joining.
We appreciate your support.

The newest facility at Central Michigan University's Biological Station on Beaver Island was dedicated on July 14, 2007. At 11,300 square feet, the James C. Gillingham Academic Center houses a modern lecture hall that seats 100; a media center with computer facilities; a library; three fully equipped, state-of-the-art laboratories; and a greenhouse.
Because you value conservational academic excellence, you are invited to join the Central Michigan University Friends of Beaver Island Society. We share the vision of the station as the preeminent teaching and research facility on the upper Great Lakes. Your annual membership is important to continuing a high quality research and educational experience for CMU students. Memberships are made on a fiscal-year basis (July 1 through June 30). Memberships may be paid in full, seminannually, or quarterly.
