Career connections
Biology
Several program options allow students to tailor biology studies to fit their specific needs. Students may opt for a general curriculum suitable for entry into careers in industrial and academic research laboratories or elementary or secondary education.
A pre-graduate/pre-professional option is available for students interested in graduate-level biology programs or professions that require advanced degrees in health-related sciences. These include human and veterinary medicine, dentistry, physician assistant, and physical therapy.
Other program options prepare students for working in natural resource management, conservation biology, or ecology. Students interested in hospital, clinical, or forensic laboratory practice or microscopy can choose programs designed specifically for these career tracks.

Chemistry
The study of chemistry provides a variety of opportunities for students with career interests in the sciences. Students may prepare for graduate work in chemistry or related areas such as pharmacology, polymer science, materials science, chemical engineering, molecular biology, and business or computer science.
Chemistry also provides an appropriate background for students entering professional programs in human or veterinary medicine, dentistry, pharmacy, optometry, medical technology, or law. Chemistry graduates successfully obtain positions in chemical, pharmaceutical, and biotechnology industries, or they may combine secondary education with their chemistry major to teach at the high school level. Many minor programs in chemistry are also available for students needing a concentration in chemistry to support a particular major or degree.

Computer Science
Computer science graduates follow career paths as applications programmers, systems programmers/analysts, computer communication specialists, database managers, and consultants.
Information technology students learn the fundamental concepts of information processing and the relationship between the underlying technology and end-user applications. Graduates will find a variety of career opportunities including network administration, database administration, Web design, application system design, multimedia design, and customer service technology.

Geography
Numerous career paths are possible for geography graduates. Depending on the area of concentration within the geography major, a student can enter a career as a climatologist, weather forecaster, cartographer, aerial photo/image analyst, geographic information systems specialist, resource manager, environmental consultant, land use planner, or educator.

Geology
Employment opportunities are increasing for geoscientists. Careers in the geosciences commonly rank among the top ten most satisfying jobs in financial magazine surveys.
Students pursuing geology as a major are well prepared for professional careers in geology. Possible employment areas include teaching, the petroleum or mining industries, governmental agencies, or engineering firms. Depending on the level of entry into the profession, geology majors may choose to pursue advanced study. CMU's program provides excellent background for students on the graduate track.
Specialization in hydrogeology and environmental geology prepares students for careers with state or national governmental regulatory agencies or with private environmental firms. Job duties involve managing groundwater as a resource, detecting and tracing groundwater contamination, evaluating sites for contamination, remediating pollution or waste disposal problems, and developing flooding or erosion hazard prevention plans.
