Outstanding Teaching Awards :: Archive
Each year the College of Science and Technology recognizes exceptional professors with the CST Award for Outstanding Teaching.
Professors receive the award based on three criteria: general teaching excellence, based in part on student evaluation and outcome assessment surveys; supervision of student research or internships; and development of new instructional methods or strategies that improve student learning.

Lisa DeMeyer
Assistant Professor of Mathematics
An assistant professor of mathematics, Lisa DeMeyer is an exceptional teacher of calculus, as well as a variety of undergraduate and graduate-level mathematics courses.
She has supervised the teaching internships of three Ph.D. students, and mentored several graduate and undergraduate student research projects.
For two summers, DeMeyer served as a faculty advisor for the Research Experiences for Undergraduates (REU) program funded by the National Science Foundation.
"I am very pleased to receive this award," DeMeyer said. "I enjoy discussing mathematics with my colleagues and with the students at CMU."
One of her nominators said, "Lisa has distinguished herself as one of the finest teachers ever seen in our department," a sentiment echoed by several calculus students who say "she is the best teacher I've ever had."

David Pape

David Pape
Professor of Mechanical Engineering
A professor of mechanical engineering, David Pape makes special efforts to enhance student learning, such as introducing a hands-on design project in the introduction to engineering course.
He views his role as a guide in preparing students for the engineering profession, assisting and motivating students to gain the knowledge and skills necessary for successful careers. To this end, Pape works with students outside the classroom as well, mentoring research projects and advising two engineering clubs.
He also led the department's efforts to shape the engineering curricula to meet ABET accreditation requirements.
"I enjoy the challenge of creating engineering programs at CMU, and having the opportunity to work with many excellent students, faculty and staff," Pape said. "It is certainly an honor to receive this award, especially considering all of the outstanding faculty in CST."
One of his nominators said, "His success is not limited to the classroom, but extends to the program level."
