Outstanding Teaching Awards :: Archive
Each year the College of Science and Technology recognizes exceptional professors with the CST Award for Outstanding Teaching.
Professors receive the award based on three criteria: general teaching excellence, based in part on student evaluation and outcome assessment surveys; supervision of student research or internships; and development of new instructional methods or strategies that improve student learning.

Felix Famoye
Professor of Mathematics
Famoye is an internationally known researcher in the field of statistics. He teaches both undergraduate and graduate statistics courses and mentors students in independent studies and master's and Ph.D. theses. He has developed several publications/presentations with students.

"I try my best to make the course relevant to what the students can relate to in their everyday life," Famoye said.
"Even in the theoretical courses, I try to include some sort of applications. Projects, activities, and technology, when applicable, are used to explain many concepts in the courses I teach."

He has supervised undergraduate and master's research projects. Lerch also coordinates the annual CMU Homecoming cardboard boat race.

"Ninety-five percent of what I like most about teaching is the interaction with students, getting to know them, and watching them grow," Lerch said. "They are an excellent source of inspiration for me. In turn, I try to keep everything fresh and interesting."
