Houghton Lake is a large, shallow, natural lake located in Roscommon County, Michigan.  The lake is surrounded by the communities of Prudenville, Houghton Lake and Houghton Lake Heights and has about 30 miles of shoreline and covers approximately 20,044 acres. There are seven major inlets to Houghton Lake located on the southeastern and northern shores.  The outlet spills over into the Muskegon River from the northern bay of the lake.

It is a popular spot for summer and winter activities, including water sports, fishing and hunting.

The Michigan Water Research Center in cooperation with the United State Corps of Engineers and the Remetrics Corporation conducted a study to document the long-term ecological impacts of various weed controls on the lake ecosystem.

The Michigan Water Research scientists collected water samples from 26 Houghton Lake sites.  At each site dissolved oxygen, temperature, turbidity, conductivity, pH, and light were measured. Samples were transported  back to the laboratory to be analyzed for nutrients, chlorophyll  and alkalinity.
