2006

(September 2007) Dane Genther (B.S. in chemistry) just started his second year of medical school at the University of Michigan. He received a scholarship for research last summer from the National Institutes of Health (NIH) to study aortic dissection. Dane lives in Ann Arbor.

2004

(April 2008) Diana Crossan (B.S. in biology) has earned a graduate degree in forensic science from Arcadia University. Seh now works at the Philadelphia Criminalistics Laboratory as a forensic scientist, where she examines evidence related to homicide, sexual assault, and fire debris cases.

(September 2005) After graduation, Jared Duquette (B.S. in biology) worked as a wildlife technician for the USDA National Wildlife Research Center in Gaylord, Michigan, doing bovine tuberculosis research in the northern Michigan area. In the fall of 2004 he moved to Columbus, Ohio to begin a master's degree program in biology, with the intent to study badgers.

2002

(May 2007) Dr. Brian L. Burnette (B.A.A. in biology and health fitness) received his M.D. degree from Michigan State University in 2006 and is now a resident in internal medicine at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota. He writes about his time at CMU: "Thinking back on it, I would not have wanted to miss a single semester...Experience in the liberal arts, fine arts, athletics, social activities, work experiences, and the sciences gave me quite a broad-based, rich education, not only allowing me to learn about the intricate science of medicine, but also allowing me to interact with and relate more closely to the patients I am privileged to serve."

2001

(September 2007) Christopher Zurenko (B.S. in biology) works for Pfizer Global Research and Development. He recently transferred from Drug Safety in Ann Arbor, MI to a drug discovery group called Exploratory Medicinal Sciences located in Groton, CT. This group does cell-based screening assays early in the pharmaceutical discovery process focusing on mechanistic cellular biology using fluorescence microscopy and flow cytometry. Chris lives in Waterford, CT.

(September 2005) Dr. Levi Pulver (B.S. in biology) now practices chiropractics at Woolston Chiropractic in Mason, Michigan. Previously, Dr. Pulver returned from northern Indonesia, where he worked as a chiropractor in a clinic set up to serve tsunami survivors. That was his second mission trip to Indonesia, both times serving as a chiropractor.

1999

(May 2005) Jody Hibma (M.S. in biology) currently lives in Vermillion, South Dakota, and works as a research associate at the University of South Dakota School of Medicine researching diabetes.

1995

(December 2007) Brian Steinberg (B.S. in earth science) is president of the Ally Group and general manager of Campus Crest Communities' college apartment complex in Ellensburg, Washington. After graduation, Brian earned an M.A. in post-secondary education: student affairs from the University of Northern Iowa and he is now working on a Ph.D. in higher education. He has over 15 years of residence life experience at nine different universities. His two greatest passions are diversity education/training and technology.

1994

(April 2008) Bob Shaw (B.S. in construction management) has worked on major construction jobs across the nation. His projects include the Broward County hockey arena in Florida, the Courtside Club within Key Arena in Seattle, and the 60-story Millenium Centre Condo, the Shubert Theater renovation, and the Trump Hotel - all in Chicago. He is currently a senior project manager for Bevis Lend Lease. He remembers Gordon Gilchrist from industrial and engineering technology as a significant mentor.

(January 2008) John Szczypka (B.S. in chemistry) has been working for MacDermid, Inc., a global specialty chemical company, for ten years. He currently works as a global application specialist for engineering coatings. He enjoys hunting, fishing, and golfing all over the world.

1992

(April 2008) Ted Gostomski (B.S. in biology, 1992, and M.S. in conservation biology, 1995) recently published his first book "Island Life: An Isle Royale Nature Guide" with co-author Janet Marr. His relationship with Isle Royale began in 1992 when he studied color-banded loons nesting on the island's Lake Superior shoreline. This work, collaborative with Whitefish Point Bird Observatory and the National Park Service, became his master's thesis project.

1990

(September 2005) Jason Link (B.S. in biology) works for the NOAA National Marine Fisheries Service at the Northeast Fisheries Science Center in Woods Hole, Massachusetts, where he leads a scientific group called the Food Web Dynamics Program. He recently won the 2005 Fisheries Society of the British Isles (FSBI) medal for exceptional advances in the study of fish biology and fisheries sciences. The FSBI medal is awarded to scientists younger than 40 and only in years when the society deems that there is a deserving candidate. Jason graduated from Guinn High School in Guinn, Michigan. He lives in Falmouth, Massachusetts with his wife, Julie, and their two children.

1989

(May 2007) LTC Darren L. Werner (B.S. in biology) is taking command of the 4th Brigade Support Battalion, 1st Brigade Combat Team, 4th Infantry Division at Fort Hood, Texas.

1973

(September 2005) Thomas Jenks (B.S. in mathematics, 1973, and M.A. in business, 1977) retired from the U.S. Army after 20 years of service. For the past 11 years he has been teaching Army ROTC in the Cleveland, Ohio area. For the past two years, he has been recognized by Who's Who Among American Teachers for his work. Consistent with his mathematics training, Tom lives in Euclid, Ohio.

1972

(April 2008) Brenda L. Harshman, D.O. (B.S. in biology) is an osteopathic internal medicine physician who has practiced primary care internal medicine for 16 years in Clare County, Michigan. She has taught CMU physician assistant students in their internal medicine rotations since 1999. She writes, "I believe my undergrad degree was wonderful preparation for medical school."

1970

(May 2005) John (Jerry) Bartholomew (B.S. in biology and geography) is a staff physician with the Department of Cardiovascular Medicine and the Section Head for Vascular Medicine at the Cleveland Clinic Foundation in Cleveland, Ohio. He resides in Broadview Heights, Ohio.

1969

(May 2005) Dee Boersma (B.S. in biology) went on to earn a doctorate in zoology from The Ohio State University. She is a biology professor at the University of Washington in Seattle, Washington. Her academic research is in the area of conservation biology and has focused on seabirds as indicators of environmental change. She was recently appointed to the Wadsworth Endowed Chair in Conservation Science. She was a member of CMU's Board of Trustees from 1970 to 1974. In 2003, she received an honorary doctor of science degree from CMU.

1968

(July 2007) John Butler (B.S. in Biology) taught math and science classes at Caledonia Community Schools for 33 years. He retired from teaching in 2002. He has coached football for 35 years and presently coaches varsity football at Grand Rapids South Christian High School in Grand Rapids, Michigan.

1967

(May 2005) Robert Judson Howdyshell (B.S. in liberal arts, 1967, and M.S. in mathematics, 1969) earned an M.S. in acquisition management from the Naval Postgraduate School in Monterey, California in 1978. He served 25 years in the U.S. Navy and retired as a captain. He works as director of Purchasing and Fleet Services for Riverside County, California. He served nine years as Library Board of Trustees president and two years on Rancho Cucamonga's city council. He lives in Rancho Cucamonga with his wife, Frances, and son, Robert Judson, "R.J."

1966

(September 2006) John E. Sterrett (B.S. in mathematics) started his freshman year at Central Michigan College in 1957 and spent the next 8 years working for the Michigan State Highway Department and going to college in alternate years. After graduating from CMU he went to Washington, D.C., to start a 30-year career as a mathematician with the Department of Defense. He retired from the Department of Defense in 1996 and lives in Temple Hill, Maryland.

1965

(September 2006) Dale Wolfgram (B.S. in chemistry) taught high school chemistry for more than 36 years, the last 33 years at Grand Blanc High School. He retired in June 2000 and still lives in Grand Blanc. He teaches part-time at Mott Community College and enjoys traveling to cities throughout the U.S. and Canada, including Nunavut, Newfoundland, Labrador, Cape Breton, New Brunswick, Prince Edward Island, and Nova Scotia.

(September 2006) James W. Hodges (B.S. in mathematics, 1965, and M.A. in mathematics, 1969) lives in Vestaburg, where he has taught school for 42 years. He teaches mathematics, physics, computer science, and robotics. He enjoys reading the news in the Spectrum.

1964

(April 2008) Gerald Riseley (B.S. in physics) retired in Punta Gorda, Florida after a great career of engineering at AT&T, UNIVAC, TI, Telex, and in sales as a manufacturing representative. He now sails on his sailboat, Quest, an IP370. He says, "I love CMU for my start, and for its great values, growth and success."

1962

(December 2007) Robert C. Mills (B.S. in biology and chemistry) taught biology at Beecher Schools in Flint, Michigan after graduating. He writes, "I truly enjoyed Professors Wakelin McNeel, Malcolm Filson and Wil Harris. Dr. Curtis Nash was a great leader in the College of Education. Dr. Neal Cuthberson was a wonderful teacher and mentor. Great program - keep up the good work and tradition of excellence."

1957

(September 2006) Oliver H. Porter (B.S. in mathematics and physics) is interested in engineering and is glad to see an engineering program at CMU. After graduating from CMU he became an officer in the U.S. Navy and earned degrees in mechanical engineering, and naval architecture and marine engineering from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. He is retired but still teaches the design codes of electric boat and submarine design. He returns to his folks' home in Standish two or three times each year.
