Central Michigan University geography professors Michael Libbee and Mark Francek have been recognized by The National Council on Geographic Education for their commitment to innovative teaching. The national honors represent the only time two faculty from the same institution have been acknowledged in the same year.
Michael Libbee

As co-founder of the Michigan Geographic Alliance, headquartered at CMU, Libbee is part of a network of teachers and geographers committed to geographic content and skills that improve the educational experiences of Michigan's K-12 students.

Libbee's enthusiasm for geography education and adherence to these high standards were major qualifiers for the Distinguished Mentor Award.

"Mike has been the inspiration behind a vast cadre of geography teachers in the state of Michigan," said Marty Mater, a Michigan Geographic Alliance teacher consultant in residence at CMU. "He is dedicated to recognizing teachers' strengths and guiding them to improve the education of Michigan students."

Mark Francek
Francek, also a member of the Alliance, received the Distinguished Teacher Award, which recognizes his innovative teaching methods that include daily backyard field trips and clips from Hollywood films to illustrate class concepts.

"Students in his class were excited and engaged all the time and wanted to go to class ... it was just something that set him apart," said Bill Johnston, a CMU senior currently student teaching in Africa. "He really goes the extra mile in every lesson."
